Politics: A Joke?
Always wondered why I am not a politician. One reason for this is what I described as political suicide in my open letter. Whilst politics, conducted honourably, can be a vehicle for change, it can also be a joke! How else can one explain the GOP stance in the Senate. I am of course referring to this HuffPost article whereby the GOP will filibuster anything the Democrats proposes, even the innocuous ones.
“Just saying no to everything may be good short-term politics, but it’s not leadership.” – Barack Obama – State of the Union address 2010
GOP has opted for short-term politics. They have opted to do battle. In doing so, they may win these battles but will loose the war! Healthcare reform is too important for this type of politics and I am encourage by this post on the Now! Blog. The moral high ground is not the exclusive rights of the Democrats and the sooner GOP start to rediscover theirs, the better for the American political system.
The Irony:
The election of Scott Brown may prove to be a turning point for GOP. That seat he won belonged to the devoted advocate of healthcare reform. The man that gave us memorable quotes like:
“We are giving assurance to the American families that help is on its way.” -Edward Kennedy
“The work goes on, the cause endures, the hope still lives and the dreams shall never die.”-Edward Kennedy
“The Constitution does not just protect those whose views we share; it also protects those with whose views we disagree.” -Edward Kennedy
“Integrity is the lifeblood of democracy. Deceit is a poison in its veins.” – Edward Kennedy
“A fundamental test of society is how it treats the least powerful” –Senator Edward Kennedy
“What we have in the United States is not so much a health-care system as a disease-care system”- Ted Kennedy
“The cause of my life to guarantee every American quality health care as a fundamental RIGHT, not a privilege” – Ted Kennedy
An irony (and a great one at that!) will be when Scott Brown gets into senate and he casts the deciding vote for healthcare reform.
Now that will be something to write about (I am holding my breath).
